The Chief asked:

I don’t know anything about cars but I plan to start driving soon and I thought I’d start off with this questions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

the smaller the car, the lighter the car, the slower the car the less gas it uses.
You will find this to be a basic fact. Look for small, lite weight cars with small engines. They will be the best on gas. Now you can buy a very expensive mid size car that will save gas, but why… the gas you save would never in your life pay the diff in the cost of the car.

    common sense man…

a 3cyl Geo metro but you dont want to look like a ***. I would go for a Honda accord. I have 97 with 265,000 miles on it and the only thing I have wasted on it is oil changes and tune ups.

to compare cars against each other, as the same test is used on each car.

However, how you drive and how well you maintain your vehicle makes a big difference as well. Speeding, lead foot driving w/hard braking, idling your vehicle, low tire pressure, dirty air filters, extra stuff in the car, etc. can all lower fuel efficiency.

If you don’t want to spend money on gasoline, you’ll have to find a car that uses another fuel, such as diesel (preferrably biodiesel), CNG, or electric.
