despite how ill Orr was toward the end
he played his last gig with big people six days before he died
he died at his home in Atlanta his last gig was in Alaska that’s one tough guy
a real rocker till the end
I met Elliot Easton and Greg Hawks in Dallas Texas before one of their shows in 1981! Played some stuff outside a record store, guiter and keyboards. concert that night was awsome aswell! May favorite 2 bands at that time you ask? The Cars and AC/DC… nice huh!
I am going to see outragous The Cars tribute band, Talk Of The Town on Fri Dec 5. They are playing at Sundance in Rocky Point, Long island, NY. Thats 60 mile drive from Manhattan
(90 mins). The Police tribute band Invisible Sun is also on the bill. This is the best music.
These posts are great, you can really tell how many people loved the Cars & have great sympathy for the passing of Benjamin Orr. The band was first rate, always reminds me of high school, a great time & specifically, summer. They swept our school by storm, songs sort of becoming our anthems. Their music holds up today & I want to thank each of them for creating such great memories. Also interesting to see these concert films, I never knew they existed. There was nowhere to see them back then.
So sad… pancreatic cancer is one of the worst, most painful ways to die. I sure hope they pumped him full of morphine and fentanyl etc. to ease his passing.
RIP Ben.
I was 16 too. It was 1979. And I can remember the first time I ever heard the song. A friend and I were casing this hot **** at a park. And this tune came on his radio at that exact moment. It was the perfect soundtrack to lust after a ***** to. It just puts most music in the few decades or so to shame. The good old days were the best of times. And 70s & 80s were the timeless US pop culture bomb.
Ben Orr died in October of 2000. He died of Pancreatic cancer. Rick is a bigtime record exec so he doesnt really want to tour etc, but the option is always open i guess. Maybe since his buddy Ben died he doesnt feel it would be the same.
The Cars officially broke up in 1988. Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes formed “The New Cars” in 2005 with Todd Rundgren (vocals & guitar), Kasim Sulton (bass) and Prairie Prince (drums). All killer musicians! They put out an album in 2006 called “It’s Alive” featuring 13 live Cars tracks, 2 live Rundgren tracks and 3 new studio tracks. It’s not bad (the live shows are really good), but it will never replace the original lineup. This “Let’s Go” performance is a classic! Great crowd too!
Oh man! that took me by surprise, I didnt know Benjamin died! When was that? How? Too sad man. I wander if Rick would still want to join them since he made a solo carer.
I was 16 when this song came out.
Ben Orr was my hero.
I thought he was the coolest guy ever.
I wanted to be just like him.
Unfortunately I had no talent.

Sometimes bands just come together and each member makes it special in their own way. The Cars were like that and I’m still digging them!

I always loved how they played new wave songs with a rock attitude and a nice lovely solo to boot.

You’ve got that right. The man was a musical genius IMO. He had the voice, the looks, and most of all - the talent.
Rest in Peace Mr. Benjamin Orr.
